What dust actually does to an AC system

It bonds to wet surfaces and stops moving. On a coil it becomes a blanket, in a tray it becomes silt, and in a filter it stops being dust and starts being a wall.

Everything on this page is about the machine, not about anyone’s health — because the machine is the part we can open and photograph.

Where it ends up

Three surfaces, in this order.

The filter catches what it can until it is full, and then it stops catching and starts blocking. What gets past settles on the evaporator coil, which is wet whenever the unit runs, so the dust bonds rather than blows through. What condenses runs into the drainage tray and takes the fine material with it.

None of this is unusual and none of it means anyone did anything wrong. It is what a few Dubai summers leave in a system nobody has had reason to open.

What it costs the machine

Airflow first, then the compressor’s working life.

A blocked filter and a coated coil both reduce airflow. The unit compensates by running longer to reach the same temperature, which is more hours on the compressor for the same result.

We will not put a percentage on your bill. The honest figure depends on your system, your building and your usage, and anyone quoting one without looking is guessing at your expense.

Common questions

Asked about dust.

Does a better filter solve it?

A finer filter catches more and blocks sooner. It helps at the filter and does nothing for what is already on the coil or in the tray.

Is the dust in Dubai worse than elsewhere?

The material is different — fine, mineral, and constant. What that means for a specific system is a question an inspection answers and an article cannot.

Can I clean it myself?

You can change a filter and you should. The coil and the tray sit behind panels that need the unit isolated first, which is where it stops being a household job.

How do I know how bad mine is?

Look. An inspection on a cleaning enquiry is free, and it gives you photographs whether or not you book the work.
